A2 motorway, exit for Velden West, follow signs approx. 5 km to Rosegg or A10 to the Villach junction, then onto the A11, exit to St. Niklas after approx. 4 km.
Follow the signs left to Rosegg for approx. 6 km.

  • 875 Bishop Arnold von Freising swaps a farm in Rosegg (in loco, qui dicitur Rase) for another in Werida (Maria Wörth).
  • 1106 Patriarch Ulrich I of Aquilea donates the parish of Ras to the Eberndorf chapter of canons (1st documentary mention).
  • 1171 Rudolf von Ras calls himself “Rudolf de Rasek” after the castle he built on today's Burgberg. Rudolf II von Ras takes part in the Friesach tournament.
  • 1255 Rudolf von Ras occupies Federaun and is taken prisoner by Bishop Heinrich I.
  • 1298 The lords of Ras-Rosegg settle with the Bamberg bishops.
  • 1315 The main Ras line dies out.
  • 1320 Peter von Liebenberg acquires the Ras estate.
  • 1335 Peter von Liebenberg loses the Rosegg estate to the lords of Wallsee and Pettau through his political and strategic gambits.
  • 1438 Anna, Countess von Schaunburg, inherits the Rosegg estate after her brother Eberhard von Pettau.
  • 1478 The Turks attack the Rosental Valley. Thousands of people are abducted; according to the chronicler Jakob Unrest, only a few farmsteads are spared between Rosegg and Möchling.
  • 1514 Caspar von Perkheim buys the Rosegg estate. According to the will of the brothers Wolf and Jörg von Perkheim (1543), the Rosegg estate falls
  • 1566 to the Losensteins through the marriage of the last Perkheim (heiress) to Georg Achaz von Losenstein.
  • 1605 Hans Rudolf von Raitenau, the youngest brother of Salzburg Archbishop Wolf Dietrich, buys the Rosegg estate.

  • 1686 Financial difficulties triggered by a fire at the castle force the Aichelburg family to sell to Georg Niclas Graf von Orsini und Rosenberg.
  • 1772 Franz Xaver Wolf von Orsini-Rosenberg starts building a castle in the valley floor.
  • 1776 A bridge is built over the Drau near St. Michel.
  • 1813 The French are expelled from Rosegg. Most of the village and the parish church are destroyed during the fighting.
  • 1829 Peter Ritter von Bohr buys the Rosegg estate from the Orsini-Rosenbergs by auction.
  • 1831 Prince Johann von Liechtenstein acquires the Rosegg estate.
  • 1848 The manorial system and subordination are abolished. The farmers now become the actual owners of their property.
  • 1849/1850 Rosegg becomes an independent municipality. The municipality encompasses the land of the old Rosegg regional court, which stretched from Maria Elend to Lake Faak. The first freely elected mayor, Anton Bernold, takes office.
  • 1888 The current local parish of St. Jakob is separated from Rosegg.
  • 1911 Ledenitzen is separated from Rosegg.
  • 1918/1919 Rosegg becomes the scene of the defensive battle. The bridge over the Drau is hotly contested.
  • 1930 In recognition of services in the defensive battle, Rosegg is promoted to a market town.
  • 1933 The market town receives a coat of arms. It is a “speaking” coat of arms that depicts the rose of the Orsini-Rosenberg family in a triangle.
  • 1963 Ground-breaking ceremony for the new bridge over the Drau.
  • 1965 On 2nd September the old Drau bridge is torn away by the floods. The new, not yet completely finished concrete bridge is put into operation ahead of time.
  • 1969 Ground-breaking ceremony for the Rosegg power plant.
  • 1974 Commissioning of the power plant.
  • 1993 Opening of the new elementary school.
  • 1996 The municipal administration moves to the renovated old elementary school.
  • 2002 Opening of the Frög prehistory centre near Rosegg; the Hallstatt-era barrow cemetery opens to the public.
  • 2005 Keltenwelt Frög is expanded and tourist signs are set up in the local area.
